Description
On October 3, 1962, the Speedmaster CK 2998 became the first OMEGA watch worn in space when astronaut Walter Schirra wore his personal model on the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program. This updated version pays homage to this pioneering timepiece, capturing the same style of the 2nd generation Speedmaster in a modern form.
The 39.70 mm case is made of polished and brushed stainless steel and is fitted with a black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle. The bezel ring is finished in black aluminum and features the legendary tachymeter scale with the emblematic “dot over ninety”.
Under the brand new hesalite-shaped sapphire crystal is a CVD-coated blue-gray dial that echoes the tone of some CK 2998 watches made in the 1960s. Along with the indexes and “Alpha” hour/minute hands, which are filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, the central “Baton” seconds hand is lacquered white to match the transferred markings. Subdials include a 30-minute hand at 3O’clock, a 12-hour hand at 6O’clock, and a small seconds hand at 9O’clock.
The historic OMEGA logo is used on the dial and crown, while the case back features the famous seahorse medallion and the engravings “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962”. The watch is powered by the coaxial calibre 3861 Master Chronometer, which is the most advanced version of the calibre 321 worn by astronauts in space. Each watch is delivered in a special presentation box with a “LEGENDARY MOONWATCH” leaflet inside.
