The Pivotal OMEGA Moment That Helped Save Apollo 13
When the Apollo 13 mission launched on April 11, 1970, no one on board or on Earth could have predicted the impending disaster. The crew, commanded by veteran astronaut James Lovell, was headed for the Moon. It was to be the third human landing on the Moon in history and another successful chapter in the Apollo project. Together with Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert and Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise, all three astronauts were equipped with OMEGA watches. Professional Speedmaster chronographs, which had been part of NASA's official kit for all manned missions since 1965.
The watches were an essential piece of equipment. As James Ragan, the NASA engineer who first tested and qualified the OMEGA Speedmaster in 1964, describes: "The watch was a vital backup. If the astronauts lost the ability to communicate with Earth or lost their digital timers, the only thing they could rely on was the watch on their wrist. It always had to be there for them if any problem arose."
Apollo 13, directed by Omega
Apollo 13 certainly faced a serious problem, and it was only two days after launch. When an oxygen tank exploded on board, crippling the service module, the astronauts found themselves in a truly dangerous situation. The mission to the moon was aborted. Now it was just a matter of getting the crew safely home. Part of the innovative rescue strategy, managed from Houston, involved moving the astronauts to the lunar module. However, this craft was not built to carry so many people for such a long time. In order to save power, the crew therefore shut down almost all power, which made their digital timers suddenly obsolete and left the astronauts at the mercy of darkness and frost.
Apollo 13 faced many challenges in the following days, while NASA worked non-stop to resolve the unstable situation. And it was before the final obstacle that the crucial precision of OMEGA watches was needed. The mission had deviated from its course by approximately 60 to 80 nautical miles, which meant that the module would enter the Earth's atmosphere at the wrong angle and bounce off it back into space with no chance of return. To manually adjust the craft's course, it was necessary to burn fuel for exactly 14 seconds. At this moment, there could be absolutely no error. Instead of digital timers, Swigert used his OMEGA Speedmaster chronograph to measure the time, while Lovell guided the craft according to the Earth's horizon.
Challenges of Apollo 13
Mission Commander James Lovell later said: "We used the OMEGA watch Jack had on his wrist and I piloted our ship. Jack timed the engine burn so we could safely return home." To great relief, the unique manoeuvre worked perfectly and on April 17, 142 hours and 54 minutes after launch, Apollo 13 splashed down safely in the South Pacific. The watch played its important role and worked exactly as it should have. Later that year, on October 5, 1970, OMEGA received the "Silver Snoopy Award" from NASA in gratitude for its contributions to the success of spaceflight. When this prestigious award was first created, Snoopy was chosen as NASA's unofficial mascot because of his ability to maintain perspective even in serious situations. He also highlighted mission success and acted as a "watchdog." The Silver Snoopy lapel pin remains a valuable reminder of OMEGA's space history to this day.
